Discussion with Mimi Muray Levitt and Tina Misrachi Martin
Tuesday, September 20, 7 p.m. Salt Lake City Main Library, 4th Floor
Just before WWI, two young men arrived separately to Ellis Island in New York City, each with no more than $50 in his pocket. Alberto Misrachi, age 18, had been shipped out of Macedonia in a trunk to Athens. From there, he set sail for New York. Hungarian Nickolas Muray, age 21, arrived from Germany, where he had studied photography and graphic design.
By 1938, Frida Kahlo was pleading with both men to lend her money. Alberto Misrachi had become the art dealer of her husband, Diego Rivera. Nickolas Muray had become someone she adored and depended upon. The daughters of both Misrachi and Muray are long-time Utah residents. Levitt grew up in New York; Tina in Mexico City. Both knew many of the talented artists who were based in New York and Mexico in the mid-20th Century, including Rufino Tamayo and Miguel Covarrubias.
Visitors to the Viva Frida! celebration will have numerous opportunities to speak with Tina Martin about her recollections of Frida and Diego (Martin will be present at all of the Viva Frida! talks). On Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library, 4th Floor, Levitt and Martin will both be present to answer questions about their families’ relationships with Frida and Diego and their recollections.
